Most beginner half plans are written for crisp fall mornings in Denver. This one isn't. Built from lessons learned logging miles in Taipei's tropical soup, it preps you for the dew point, not just the distance.
I trained for a 50K ultramarathon eating nothing but Taiwan convenience store food and night market stalls — no gels, no $4 energy chews, no protein powder. Here's how the macros, the gut, and the wallet held up against standard American ultra nutrition.
Taiwan's night markets and 24-hour food stalls quietly run the world's cheapest post-run recovery system. Here's what local runners actually eat after long runs, and five meals you can copy back home for a fraction of the cost of a bottled recovery shake.

The sticker price on a Taiwanese HOKA listing is only half the story — the exchange rate, card fees, and payment platform markups finish the math. We break down how currency swings have historically turned imports into steals (and when buying stateside was the obvious play).
Taiwan's e-commerce platforms are packed with HOKA models and colorways you'll never see on the US site — but the listings might as well be written in code. Here's how to decode product titles, dodge fakes, and time your order around Double 11 without speaking a word of Mandarin.
That Taiwan-market Bondi was $40 cheaper — until the outsole separated at mile 180 and you had to figure out who, exactly, owes you a replacement. We called HOKA customer service, combed runner forums, and documented one warranty claim from start to finish. Here's the honest risk math.
We ran the numbers on a hypothetical Bondi 9 order from Taipei — exchange rates, freight, duties, the works — and compared it against what the same shoe costs during a stateside sale. Here's the honest verdict, plus a simple break-even framework.
Ordering HOKA from a Taiwanese retailer can unlock colorways and deals you won't find stateside — but only if you nail the sizing. Here's how to decode the charts, dodge conversion traps, and avoid getting stuck with a very expensive paperweight.
Some of the best HOKA colorways never touch American soil — they drop quietly in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea first. Here's what it actually costs to import them, when the math works, and when you should just buy local.
